Bill & Emma – Tango
What was Harold Wheeler thinking when they chose this song? So not a tango song. I also wasn’t a fan of their outfits. However! They had good body contact (which is important for the tango), Bill’s posture is getting better and better, and overall it wasn’t bad.
Score: 8, 8, 7 = 23
Elizabeth & Val – Cha Cha
Please Val, take her to a ballet class so she can learn to point her feet. It would make her lines 100% better! This dance was interesting because outside of the hold she had great hip action but when she got into hold with Val, she lost it all. So that was really frustrating to watch because I knew it was there but it never showed up in the hold.
Score: 10, 10, 10 = 30 First 10s of the season. It was deserving of that thought I wish I would have seen more hip action while in hold.
Leah & Tony – Quickstep
Her shoulders kept creeping up (which the judges did comment on), and overall this was a good dance. I was extremely happy for Len calling out people (not Leah and Tony) for not being in hold the entire or close to the entire time. I wish he would have done so sooner and penalized people for it.
Score: 9, 9, 9 = 27 Well deserved
Brant & Peta – Tango
This was excellent. Amazing body contact and in hold throughout. There was a couple of spots that were rough/choppy but overall this was an excellent dance.
Score: 9, 10, 9 = 28 This was underscored. It deserved 10s.
Amber & Derek – Samba
Their samba roll looked very forced and labored. I think Derek should have left it out because it’s a tough move to do. Amber had absolutely no hip action. Again, Derek added hip hop into it and turned a Samba into something you would see at a hip-hop club. I would rather see a technically correct dance than a dance that breaks the rules. Breaking the rules “just for the fans” to me is ugly and takes away from dance that could be excellent.
Score: 10, 8, 10 = 28 WAY WAY over-scored. Len was absolutely correct. I’m really starting to get sick of Derek knowingly breaking the rules and know that his dances are going to be a problem. It’s disrespectful to the judges, especially Len, and it’s really disrespectful to your celebrity because it makes it seem like they can’t do the dances without breaking rules.
Jack & Cheryl – Paso Doble
Jack is steadily improving and really could be a dark horse to end up in the finals. However, he still needs to tuck his butt under him. This dance was okay for me. It wasn’t memorable but it wasn’t bad.
Score: 8, 9, 8 = 25 Fair score *note to Derek: See don’t do gimmicks and you’ll get good comments from Len
Nicole & Sasha – Foxtrot
I would like to see a bit more body contact while in hold but oh man Nicole’s lines on this dance? Ah-mazing! I really really enjoyed this dance. I did think they were going to get a note from Len about the lack of hold at times and the long “intro” into the dance but they didn’t!
Score: 9, 9, 9 = 27 I would have liked to see them get a 10 (at least one) because Nicole’s lines are amazing.
Corbin & Karina – Viennese Waltz
O.O This was an absolute nightmare. First off, let’s start with the music. This was not a waltz people! While it was in 3/4 time, waltz music as a distinct signature of “down, up, up, down, up, up”. This is done so that the dance has a rise and fall to it. Secondly, Viennese Waltz, as I mentioned last week, is in HOLD the entire dance except for the opening and closing (which are only suppose to be about 3 measures long; and if we’re getting picky, in true dancesport, VW is started in hold and ended in hold). There was none of that in this dance. Corbin once again is hunched over. The man in Waltz is suppose to be tall, elegant, and dashing. Third, let’s not forget there were several lifts! Lifts in standard/smooth are a no-no. I really hated this dance.
Score: 8, 7, 8 = 23Corbin got a MAJOR gift here. This was way way to high
After these dances came the mix-up challenge. I have to say I loved this challenge. This is how the opening rounds of many dancesport competitions are done (though the song lasts a lot longer :)). So I’m a little surprised how many of the pros weren’t happy about it. Though I did find out that they didn’t find out about this challenge until the middle of the week! So that may be the reason.
I was a little upset that both Brant and Nicole got second because they were better than both Corbin and Amber. This challenge is a lot easier for those two because of their musical background. This challenge required them to switch styles and find the beat and if you’ve had music training well then it’s much easier to find that beat. So I thought Nicole and Brant should have won.
There was no elimination this week due to technical issues with the voting last week.
As for the rumor… there’s a rumor flying around that they are going to replace Len. I think this is HUGE mistake (unless they replace him with another ballroom person like Louis or say Nick Kosovich). This show is about ballroom dancing and neither Carrie Ann or Bruno have competed and judged it before like Len. If anything get rid of the other two.
